For as long as he could remember, Richard Oppenheim, 73, had small bumps on his legs. Doctors explained that the bumps, called lipomas, were collections of blood and fluid between his skin and underlying muscle and were no cause for worry. But about two years ago, when Richard experienced swelling in his groin and one of the bumps began to grow larger, he visited his doctor, who drained and biopsied the area.
A Troubling Diagnosis
Richard was diagnosed with amyloidosis, which would require chemotherapy. His doctor also discovered that Richard had T-cell lymphoma and cryoglobulinemia, abnormal proteins in the blood that can lead to blocked arteries, organ damage and other problems. As a result of his treatments, Richard experienced neuropathy and heart problems. He lost his strength, had trouble breathing and couldn’t walk. He was very ill and was quickly losing his independence; his wife couldn’t leave him in the house by himself because she feared he might fall.
Richard, who lives in Holmdel, was frequently traveling to New York City for consultations, and the journey was becoming too difficult to continue. Richard’s daughter, Meredith, researched the best specialists she could find for her father nearer to home.
Excellent Care, Close to Home
Meredith and Richard found Susan Greenberg, M.D., an oncologist at Riverview Medical Center. Dr. Greenberg says, “I reviewed the genetic changes that were found in his tumor cells. It was as easy as matching the drug to the mutation.”
Dr. Greenberg prescribed a life-changing “miracle drug” that interferes with the spread of cancer, which has made Richard feel much better. He no longer experiences nausea and has regained his strength. Richard has also continued his chemotherapy treatment at Riverview, which he calls “chemo and lunch.” He says, “It’s like being at the spa.” Richard is beyond pleased with the care he has received from Dr. Greenberg and the staff at Riverview. “Dr. Greenberg is a wonderful friend and doctor; she is just terrific. Riverview has amazing nurses — they are very caring and understanding. The entire staff is fantastic. You really feel like you are a friend more than a patient.” Today, Richard’s cancer is in remission, and he is back to living his normal life. He recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Ronnie. He enjoys spending time with his family, including his children and grandchildren, and looks forward to resuming his worldwide travels.
Every year it is an honor to serve as the president of Riverview Medical Center, a hospital that is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. This year, Riverview really set the bar high with a laser-focused approach to deliver the best and safest patient care. We utilized cutting-edge technology, harnessed innovative procedures through the expertise of our highly skilled and trained physicians, and adapted nation-wide best practices to orchestrate excellence.
Riverview Medical Center was also thrilled to be named as the second most beautiful hospital in the U.S. by Soliant Health. We take a lot of pride in our facility and community, which is why in 2017, Riverview enrolled in the Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI), which supports hospitals in accelerating the greening of health care and reducing environmental impact, committing to offering healthier food, reducing energy and waste, and using safer chemicals, among other actions. Riverview also partnered with Clean Ocean Action, a not-for-profit dedicated to improving the degraded water quality of the marine waters off the New Jersey and New York coast. In addition, Riverview Medical Center recently joined NJ Frames Advisory group, a regional and collaborative effort in coastal Monmouth County that seeks to understand and address flood vulnerability in the region.
In 2018, I feel confident that we will continue to surpass expectations, achieving excellence in how we serve our incredible community. We will continue to seek out new ways to remain innovative, strengthen strategic partnerships, implement new procedures and practices, promote sustainability and continuously strive to maintain and build upon the trust our community has bestowed upon us.
It was the unwavering support of our community, generous donors, talented physicians, dedicated team members and devoted volunteers that enabled us to have such a successful year and I know that we will continue to garner recognition as a hospital that is beautiful both inside and out.

Complex Patient Care in the Modern ICU
Each year, it is estimated that nearly six million patients are treated in Intensive Care Units (ICU). As that number continues to rise, the number of critical care physicians, known as intensivists, cannot keep pace with the demand.
The technology and collaboration by remote intensivists has been embraced by patients, family members, physicians and team members alike and has proven to be a beneficial way to heighten care for the medical center’s sickest patients.
Riverview Medical Center Opens Surgical Clinic for Under and Uninsured Community Members
To better meet the needs of community members with Medicaid, Charity Care, Horizon NJ Health and United Health Care Family plans, Riverview Medical Center opened a specialized surgical clinic to treat specific conditions.
Riverview Named One of the Best Hospitals in New Jersey
Each year, U.S. News & World Report evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals and ranks them based on how well they care for the sickest, most medically complex patients.
New Cancer Care Center Marks One Year of Serving Oncology Patients
Throughout 2017, Riverview Medical Center treated community members living with cancer in its brand new, expanded Cancer Care Center, offering a myriad of services in one building. Complete with beautiful physician practices, a relaxing atmosphere for infusion patients, the most advanced radiation therapy treatment options, and a spacious inpatient floor where nearly every room has a water view, patients and team members alike agree that the look and feel, combined with the plethora of treatment options, have made a tremendous impact on the health and wellbeing of patients who have received care in the new facility.
The Birth of Additional Maternal Medicine Offerings at Riverview
With the addition of procedures performed by many credentialed obstetricians at Riverview Medical Center such as the gentle C-section, which provides a more “natural” birthing experience for moms who must undergo this procedure, to the implementation of peanut balls – an alternative to round birthing balls – that have been found to help reduce labor length, Riverview worked throughout the year to enhance services for birthing moms. Many of these additions and enrichments led to the medical center being named as the best birthing center in New Jersey by NJMom.com.
