Losing Weight for All the Right Reasons
When even taking a short walk became a struggle, Alicia Coston knew she had to find a more effective way to control her weight. She had certainly tried to handle things on her own with food programs, weight loss shakes, exercise, and various diets but the pounds lost would always come back along with a few more. Her excess weight was causing health problems including high blood pressure and pre-diabetes as well as exacerbating her long-term asthma. Alicia and her husband were planning to start a family but her doctors all agreed that her obesity would make conception and carrying a healthy pregnancy very difficult and possibly dangerous for mom and baby.
After much discussion with her husband and medical team, Alicia chose to have weight loss surgery with Dr. Amit Trivedi, and his team at Advanced Laparoscopic Associates in Paramus.
The surgery was performed at Pascack Valley Medical Center in Westwood, (where Alicia was able to stay in one of the private single occupancy rooms). To prepare patients for surgery, the Bariatric Program at Pascack Valley offers a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach that includes education about the procedure, lifelong nutrition and exercise guidance, as well as ongoing psychological counseling and support groups.
For Alicia, Dr. Trivedi recommended and performed a sleeve gastrectomy, which is the most commonly performed laparoscopic weight loss procedure in the United States. In this surgery, approximately 75% of the stomach is removed. Dr. Trivedi states that the surgery takes the original stomach, which is about the size of a deflated football, down to the size of a thin banana. Additionally, the part of the stomach that is removed is also responsible for the production of a hormone called Ghrelin, which is responsible for hunger. This results in much less hunger for the patient. Weight loss surgery has been proven to be an effective tool in fighting the dangers of obesity, says Dr. Trivedi. It is indicated for patients with a body mass index of over 40, or over 35 with weight related medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Most insurance companies now approve weight loss surgery. “Patient safety is our ultimate guiding principle with any of the bariatric procedures we perform”, said Dr.
Trivedi. “We start educating our patients from the very first meeting so that they are well informed of the options available and how to use surgery as a tool to help them achieve their weight loss goals”. We also keep primary care providers informed so they can be ready to help the patient stay on track after the surgery.
After her sleeve gastrectomy, Alicia adapted a new healthy lifestyle that included better eating habits and exercise. With her efforts and by utilizing the resources of the Bariatric
Center, she has lost a total of 123 pounds! “This was truly a life changing event for me”, said
Alicia Coston “Even my asthma improved after the surgery. My blood pressure is better and I am no longer pre-diabetic!” Best of all, I was able to finally become pregnant and my pregnancy has been healthy.” Alicia continues to work out regularly, eat nutritious foods in much smaller amounts, and stays focused on being healthy as she prepares for her baby.
Alicia’s husband, Maurice, has also been battling excess weight. Maurice started to gain weight after a back injury kept him from being as active as he wanted to be. With high blood pressure and a family history of heart disease, he attend one of Dr. Trivedi’s free weight loss seminars and has decided to get the sleeve gastrectomy himself. He states he is looking forward to a healthier life with his wife and new baby.
