Expanded Cardiac Surgery Programs with Three New Surgeons

At the heart of our cardiovascular care is our leading-edge cardiac surgery programs at Hackensack University Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center. With 1,340 surgical procedures performed in 2016, Hackensack Meridian Health continues to provide the latest treatments using innovative technology and new techniques. To further grow these sophisticated cardiac surgery programs, Hackensack Meridian Health has recruited three cardiothoracic surgeons with stellar reputations.

Hackensack University Medical Center welcomed Mark B. Anderson, M.D., FACS, vice chair of Cardiac Surgery Services and cardiothoracic surgeon, to the Hackensack University Medical Group. Dr. Anderson is a leading expert in minimally invasive heart surgery, robotic techniques and mechanical assist devices. His clinical expertise extends to all aspects of cardiac surgery, including coronary bypass surgery, valve replacement and repair, thoracic aortic surgery, mechanical circulatory support, Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) surgery and endovascular techniques.

Additionally, Jersey Shore University Medical Center recruited two cardiothoracic surgeons – Kourosh T. Asgarian, D.O., and Sinan Simsir, M.D., to join its Cardiac Surgery Program, which is the only program of its kind in Monmouth and Ocean counties. As a leader in his field, Dr. Asgarian has developed and directed TAVR and structural heart programs. He also has led minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery programs, and performs robotic cardiac surgery. Dr. Simsir is an expert in heart failure surgery with extensive experience in heart transplants as well as implantation of Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD). He founded the VAD program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, and served as the surgical director for its heart and lung transplantation program.

The addition of these expert surgeons has elevated the high-quality care provided throughout our network to ensure that New Jersey residents and those living in the tristate area have access to the very best, most comprehensive heart and vascular care, close to home.

Advancing Minimally Invasive Treatments for Patients with Valve Disorders

Hackensack Meridian Health remains on the forefront of cardiovascular care, advancing the latest minimally invasive procedures, including those used to treat patients with valve disorders. Hackensack University Medical Center is among the first hospitals in New Jersey and one in only a handful of hospitals in the New York metropolitan area to use the MitraClip® system – a minimally invasive option – for people with severe mitral valve regurgitation (MR) for whom open heart surgery is considered too risky. MitraClip, approved by the FDA in October 2013, is the world’s first percutaneous mitral valve repair therapy for select patients with severe MR.

Additionally, Hackensack Meridian Health’s TAVR program continues to grow at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center, providing patients throughout the region with superior outcomes to treat aortic stenosis. Collectively, Hackensack Meridian performed 214 TAVR procedures in 2016 and expects volumes to continue to increase as the FDA recently approved the use of the procedure on intermediate-risk patients. What’s more, Hackensack University Medical Center is one of the only hospitals in New Jersey to have implanted the Melody® Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve percutaneously in the pulmonic valve position, and to perform a percutaneous paravalvular leak closure. Patients living with valve disorders benefit from a strong network of cardiovascular experts who take a multidisciplinary approach using the newest techniques to ensure the very best outcomes.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center Implants the World’s Smallest Pacemaker

In 2016, Jersey Shore became the first hospital in New Jersey to implant the Micra® Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS) – the world’s smallest pacemaker – since the device gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in April 2016. Micra TPS is a new type of heart device that treats patients with bradycardia, a common heart condition characterized by a slow or irregular heart rhythm. At one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker, Micra TPS is the only leadless pacemaker approved for use in the U.S. The minimally invasive procedure takes less than an hour, and unlike traditional pacemakers, Micro TPS is not visible.
